Hike Details
This hike is a short but attractive part of a much longer hiking route, established in 1989 and called the “Wayfarer’s Path”. It extends from Bellano to Varenna along a narrow mule track winding along the mountainside, among chestnut woods and gentle cultivated slopes.
In a few hours it collects the best characteristics of the lake: majestic landscapes, botanical and geological peculiarities, rustic houses, olive groves, and so on. Last but not least, there are the works of the route themselves, namely the paving, the steps, the bridges and the dry-stone walls.
Among the sites we visit during our excursion, there are:
• Orrido di Bellano: a deep natural gorge, formed over 15 million years by the waters of the Pioverna stream.
• Vezio Castle: dating back to the 12th century, it was located in a splendid position above Varenna and was one of the most important signaling points.
• Varenna and its black marble quarries: used mainly in the Renaissance era for the creation of ornamental elements of churches and other religious-themed buildings in Lombardy.
